We’re not part of the fun this year (again…) but we still are related to it in so and so many ways… and, like every band in basel, feel indebted to it. A gig at Bscene was what our ambition first aimed at, so many years ago, and we will try to make it again. Big plans drawn up already. Next year.
But for now check out this years line up. The Leopold Krauss Wellenkapelle is playing their irresistible black forest surf, Al Jawahla and The Pullup Orchestra will be rraaackin’ with danceable horn ridden tunes, and what else is there: The bianca Story, supergroup Dogs Bollocks, mayhem with Navel and Cryptonites etc. etc.

… in discovering this New York supergroup and its firstling (yeah, it is an english word) from 2008, so humbly I won’t even describe them in my words: “The Menahan Street Band is a collaboration of musicians from Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings (Dave Guy, Homer Steinweiss, Fernando Velez, Bosco Mann), El Michels Affair (Leon Michels, Toby Pazner), Antibalas (Nick Movshon, Aaron Johnson) and the Budos Band (Mike Deller, Daniel Fodder), brought together by musician/producer Thomas Brenneck (Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, Budos Band, Amy Winehouse) to record hits in the bedroom of his Menahan St. apartment in Bushwick, Brooklyn. With influences reaching beyond the funk/soul/afrobeat architecture of their other projects into the more ethereal realms of Curtis Mayfield and Mulatu Astatke, the Menahan Street Band creates a unique new instrumental soul sound that is as raw as it is lush.”
Lush and raw it is. Listen to it on hypemachine.

There are countless crossover covers of the Motorheads Ace of Spades, but Eli ‘Paperboy’ Reeds recent outing might be the hottest. Check it out on his Myspace site. And wait for the new album, later in 2009.

The Kitchenettes are working hard to create a new website. So, this site might still be less than perfect, under constant change and full of surprises. But we’re on it!
For you bookers and professional folks: Info on the band, contact and downloads and sounds are up to date and functional.
